Goodbye WoW. It's not you, it's me (well, partially you)




So Cataclysm, probably the best expansion ever released, has hit World of Warcraft. After having an immensely fun time leveling, as well as having the most fun I've had in a while doing the extremely hard instances, I finally feel it's time to call it quits on the game that I've had a lot of fun with over the past few years.

It's not because it's lost it's fun (though I have been getting more frustrated recently, but I'll get into that later), it's mostly because it's time for me to move on.

Between all of my characters, I have a solid 2 years of playtime. This isn't how long I've been playing (I've been playing since the June prior the Burning Crusade expansion was released, which makes it about 5 years I think). In that time I've really only gotten two different characters to the max level, my Paladin (Superbian, superbia (Latin for Pride)+N to make it sound more masculine), and my first character, Xenodyne (Warlock). I've had a ton of different alts, most of which peak out around 25-30.

I've seen things, gotten places that I wasn't supposed to be able to get, and I've had fun throughout all the years total.

But it's time for me to move on.

Recently while playing, I noticed that days were tending to slip away from me. I would wake up, flip on my computer, take a shower, then come back and play the game for 8-12 hours a day.

That's the point when I finally decided it was becoming an unhealthy obsession. This isn't the first time I've spent so much time on the game (during Burning Crusade and the beginning of Wrath of the Lich King I spent a lot of time on as well), but now that I'm older, and I haven't really progressed so much personally, I took a while and decided it was finally time to call it quits. It's also coupled with the lack of success in areas where I have been trying to succeed for years, and also recent developments (or lack of such) that have weighed on my opinion.

Now I mentioned that I'm getting a little frustrated with the game, but not really more than I would normally be, but it does also come into consideration while I'm quitting.

First off, PVP has become pretty frustrating (get more resilience!). While I agree that more resilience would help, there's a ton of flaws that need to be fixed to help even the balance. As it stands, casters have an extreme advantage to melee classes as a whole, the mage class being the biggest example of what's wrong.

For those who aren't that familiar with the topic, let me give you a little bit of backstory on what changes/reasons for those changes that happened in the Cataclysm. Reasons after the break.

Anyways, every expansion, 10 more levels have been added, and more talents have been added to the talent trees, either to help augment abilities, or add new ones to certain classes. A few talents in each tree would help the class cope with some of the mechanisms that would hinder them from being the Uber class. For example, Paladins that specced Ret (my spec for PVP) would get the ability to break out of stuns with their move that normally only breaks/makes them immune to snares and slows. A lot of other classes had things like "Disarm time reduction" and "Reduction of your spells ability to be dispelled (or removed)" These made sense.

Only problem was, it became more of an arms race amongst the classes to have more CC to counter the anti-CC in each tree, and vice versa.

With Cataclysm, Blizzard completely redid all of the talent trees, and the way that they work, so that they could change stats, and make it a little easier for people (and newbies most of all) to pick up and understand, and make the better choices. They also wanted to put an end to the arms race by removing most of the talents that countered the crowd control mechanisms.

You would think that, while pruning these talents, they would reduce or remove some of the skills and talents that were built to counter the old skills and talents. Unfortunately, most were kept, and even a few were added.

"But what about a PVP trinket, which removes movement impairing effects?"

Unfortunately, the trinket has a two minute cooldown, which sounds short, but is actually a very, very long time when you're talking about skills that come up every 10 seconds, and multiple skills at that.

"So CC has become more powerful, so what? You should have tools to deal with it."

Unfortunately, as I mentioned before, the tools have largely been removed, while leaving these ranged classes at a huge advantage.

Yes, I'm mainly complaining from a Ret Paladin's point of view. They removed a ton of the utility that we had (not being able to cleanse magic, breaking out of stuns) and gave us...what feels like nothing. We still have the ability to break out of roots/snares, unfortunately it's on a bit of a long cooldown, doesn't last for half of the cooldown, and can be removed and/or stolen. We were given a gap closer that is affected by snares/stuns, and doesn't clear distance very fast.

"So...you're warriors now?" Kind of. Not as many stuns, don't have a distance closer that works as well, and we don't do as much burst damage.

And this isn't a cry against Warriors. They work a lot harder than the rest of the classes to be competitive, it just doesn't feel like balance is in place when a single class has absolutely no counter (Mages). Add in the fucking ton of damage that they can do on TOP of all of the crowd-control, and it does tend to feel a bit retarded to even try to PVP.


But Mages aren't the only problem. Druids feel like they've become an even bigger problem than any other class. They can freely change their role on the fly, while staying a healer the whole time. Add in to the fact that they have a ton of escapes, and now an instant root? It kind of makes it feel silly to not play a druid or a mage.


I really like the sand textures this expansion. It looks absolutely gorgeous.



So yeah, minor gripes. Things feel a bit unbalanced in PVP. Granted, it may be my gear, class, or maybe I'm just bad (all likely options), but at the same time, I've never felt as useless in PVP as I have this expansion. As I said, minor complaint, but not my reason for quitting.


I'm also getting a little tired by the player base. We're on a server (Gurubashi) and trying to get a guild together. Unfortunately, when I spend whole days spamming the global channel (trade) with our message, I'm lucky if I get even one person looking for a guild out of the multiple days I try. One problem is that we don't have too many active people (starting small, few core people), the other problem is that at least half of our server (West Coast server) don't speak English, they speak Portuguese.

Now, this isn't a racist statement, but I feel like it somewhat ruins the infrastructure of a game that's built on communicating with other people when half of a server (if not more) is unable to understand you. Being a US server, this shouldn't be a problem, but it sadly is. (and I know that most of the Brazilians are some of the best players on the server, etc)

I have a similar gripe when I'm playing a game like League of Legends, and I get paired with 1-2 people who don't speak English. In that game, where it's a 5v5 PVP game, and you have no ability to communicate/understand what your teammates are saying, there's a clear problem.

And that makes it frustrating to try to communicate a recruitment message to a server where half of them can't understand what you're saying, the other half are already firmly planted in their own guilds.


Finally, my last item under "reason to quit" goes along with what I was saying in the beginning. I've been playing too much. There are plenty of other things I should be doing instead of playing, and getting angry over both PVE and PVP aspects of the game. One of those is to start learning/practicing the craft that I've been trying to get into for years, so that I can work my way closer to the career I want. Another of which is to work on losing the weight I've accumulated over the years, and turn the fat into something useful.

Either way, it's become clear to me that I can't do all of this unless I take out this 8-12 hour time sink that is World of Warcraft. Maybe I'll play again sometime, but for now, I'm leaving it behind.

Mass Effect 2 for PS3 to use ME3 Engine?

Best news I've heard all month. Mass Effect 2 for PS3 will be running on the ME3 engine.


Not only does this mean that the graphics are going to be better, and this isn't just going to be some shitty port with all the DLC, but this means that the engine is working well enough to run a whole game in it.

This barely hints at the stage of development that Mass Effect 3 is in, but I still find this to be great news.

It'll be very tempting to grab this game when it comes out. After all, ME2 was awesome, and I'd love to play a more awesome-er version. :)

I really want to start out, and apologize for just about every trailer coming from Gametrailers.com. They're probably the only video versions of this that exist on YouTube right now (until they get ripped down tomorrow due to copyright infringement).

That being said, I really don't know how to feel about this game. A lot of people have accused this of being "modern warfare'd up" which I find odd, considering it's an EA game. If anything it's Medal of Honored up, if that.

Now, I'm not opposed to the concepts shown in this trailer. From what I remember of SSX, it was a very over-the top and crazy game, and it seems like it's bringing more craziness to the series. Hell, even the base-jumping suit is a kinda cool idea. Maybe it's just that the game looks so goddamn gritty that it's drawing so reminiscent of Call of Duty.


Either way, if they can make it as over the top as the previous ones, while not taking itself too serious, it might just be a good game.

Forza 4



Now, if that trailer is to be believed, even 1/2 of the trailer, then we're in for a treat. Also if the trailer is to be believed, it's possible to release a sequel to a popular racing game much sooner than 5 years after the previous installment.

Forza 3 is probably my favorite racing game. Ok, I lied. It's my favorite racing game (next to Diddy Kong Racing, but we'll classify that as a different type of game for the purpose of this). It (in my opinion) blew Gran Turismo out of the water, and I even heard that it even impressed the creator of Gran Turismo (which then caused another delay to Gran Turismo 5).


From what I can tell just from that trailer, Gran Turismo 5 may have thrown down the gauntlet, but Forza is aiming to pick it back up, and beat the shit outta it with it.


I know which side I'm backing. (hint: I <3 Forza 3)

Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception



This is another game I'm looking forward to. Uncharted 2 was one of the most beautiful games I've ever seen on any console. This looks like it's going to follow suit.


Can't wait to get my hands on it. Knowing Naughty Dog, we'll have some insane sand physics too, which is something I've been kind of surprised hasn't been explored in games just yet.

Portal 2



Who doesn't love Portal? Portal was a pretty fun game, and that wasn't even a full game, but more of a test to see how well the game did. It did so fucking good that Valve is pushing out a sequel in advance of their more popular series, Half Life (no, I won't let it go :P).

The trailer kind of sets up the co-op mode of the game, something that hasn't been seen in a single-player Valve game since Half Life was on the PS2.


Of course it will be good, etc. What will be interesting is if each bot has it's own unique ability to it.


Oh, and portals with friends.

Insane



Ok, so it may just be a trailer with a bunch of creepy sounds, and even creepier fucking images.


But what this represents is possibly one of the best things to happen to the Horror genre of games on the Console since Dead Space. Guillermo del Toro has teamed up with THQ to work on a game. What's amazing about this is that del Toro is great at creating really amazing, creepy creatures. This game is definitely going to be a mindfuck, can't wait to hear more about it.

Prototype 2



The original game was a highly anticipated title for me, but was largely overshadowed by Infamous. Which is funny, because I originally had expected Infamous to be a shitty ripoff, and Prototype to be a fucking amazing game.

The game felt clunky and uninspired to me. A lot of the mechanics just felt frustrating, and the fights just felt like a straight up button-mashing experience.

Maybe that will change with the next installment.



-SPOILER ALERT-

What is odd about this game is that in the original, your character really wasn't a bad guy. It ended up saving the city from a madman, and you stopped a nuclear attack on NY. This game kind of changes the ending (no bueno, IMO), and instead of the city rebuilding, all the powers under control, it seems to be reversing it.



Of course, the story was so hard to follow that I may have gotten the ending completely wrong.

Resistance 3




Ok, so the trailer is pretty standard for the post-apocalyptic setting that the previous Resistance games set up. For those of you who have never played a Resistance game, I recommend checking out the first one, and skipping the second (which was overall a downgrade from the awesome game that #1 was).

After the second though, I'm merely curious about the game. I don't really see what direction the new game is heading in, other than looking a bit like they've played a lot of Left4Dead and they said, "What if it was aliens, and you could get a lot of alien weapons?"

Beyond that, it's still too early to tell what the game will be like.

Mass Effect 3 (or WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO)



Ok, so a few of you may have read my post about a week ago about how much I love Mass Effect 2. It's definitely my GOTY2010, and it ranks really high up on "Favorite games of all time."

So when I heard that there was going to be a Mass Effect 3 announcement at the VGA's, I came, hard. Then I saw the trailer. When I woke up 2 minutes after I apparently blacked out, it looked frosty the snowman had gone and s'ploded all over my room.


Just kidding, but the game looks pretty intense. I really am looking forward to it.


What's going to be odd is with this pressing attack on Earth, how will Bioware keep the universe so open, and keep it from degrading into a generic level-based 3rd-person shooter?


Only time will tell.




Now I need a change of pants.

Thor



So another movie-tie in. You know what's funny? Game developers seem to think that if they completely shun the plot of the movies, they can escape the curse of a bad movie video-game tie in. In this case, it's handicapped on two counts. 1) It's a movie based off a comic book 2) It's a game based off a movie based off a comic book.


To me, the trailer looks like a God Of War clone. I'm sorry, even some of the finishers.

I really don't know why Marvel keeps reaching out to Sega to do the design on their movie games. The Iron Man games bombed (despite the developers trying to be really enthusiastic about how they wanted to make it the best of the best, etc), and this looks like it's going to do just as well. If you want to make a game based on a super hero, they should be cribbing notes from the Arkham Asylum team. You have to make your game unique. Honestly, I'd much rather sit down with a copy of God Of War any day then have to deal with Thor "Thou!" and "Thee!"s any day.

Though what's funny to note is that Chris Hemsworth (the actor playing Thor in the upcoming movie) is voicing Thor. Definitely a step up from Iron Man, where they used the voice of some random guy instead of that of Robert Downey Jr.

Mortal Kombat (Now With More Kratos!)



I'll be one of the first to admit that I'm not very good at fighting games. I like them, but I'm just not that good at them. Either way, I've always liked the brutality of the Mortal Kombat games. You know what other game series is amazingly brutal? God of War. It actually surprises me that nobody thought about MK and Kratos mixing blades before. Hell, I would've seen that coming before a Soul Calibur game exclusive to the PSP. Now, this got leaked a few days ago, but not the trailer. Not the longest thing, but I can imagine that Kratos would be a fucking amazing character for MK. Can't wait to see what his fatalities will be.

Oh, did I mention he's PS3 exclusive? Pretty sure the only character I can think of for an Xbox version would be someone from Gears of War.

Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim




So I have to say, although I'm a huge gamer (and nerd), I've never really been able to get into the Elder Scrolls series. Maybe it just has to do with the fact that open-world games aren't my taste, but I might have to make an exception for Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. The trailer (even though we don't see much) is pretty exciting. I also got a bit of a vibe of vikings, though that may have just been the beard on the character carved in stone. I also really liked the effects that they deployed for the stone, and how when the dragon breathes stone fire, the heat it was giving off was what made the flame look like it was moving.

It's the small things, y'know?

Batman: Arkham City



Ok, now this is a game I was definitely looking forward to hearing more about.

Arkham Asylum was the best thing to happen to Batman since Christopher Nolan. The original teaser trailer, however, left much to be desired. There was a ton of teaser info in the first trailer, but nothing solid. While this trailer doesn't debut anything really "new" other than another tease, it showcases some fucking BEAUTIFUL graphics. The thing is, they don't look too far off of an in-game engine. Definitely within the confines of something the PS3 is capable of, if not a gaming PC.

I was a little surprised that the figure (and new big baddie) ends up being Hugo Strange. Although he's Batman's first reoccurring character, based on the dialogue I would have thought they'd go with Dr. Hurt, one of Batman's newest (and greater) foes.

Oh well, either way, I'm confident that the game will be just as good, if not better than the original (Dark Knight anyone?).


Also big was the announcement that it will be out in Fall 2011, assuming that it doesn't get delayed into Q1 2012.

Spike VGA Awards 2010




So as anyone with standard cable service knows, Spike threw their big Video Game Award show, where all sorts of celebrities get together and pretend to know what they're talking about when it comes to games, and game developers accept awards for their team's hard work. Occasionally, we get a glimpse into a new game. This year, however, had a TON of announcements. Hell, that was the only reason I actually watched it. I have my own table of GoTY and favorite this-and-thats, so I don't really care what the majority thinks.

What I do care about is new games.


So I was tossing and turning trying to get some sleep, and then I remembered that I had recorded the VGA's. Can you say, "Wrong thing to remember at the wrong time?" Either way, before I had even debated it I decided to flip it on.

Being 2:00 (and wanting some sleep), not caring about who actually received what award, I quickly fast-forwarded through everything until I came upon the trailers for the new games.


Instead of doing this in one long post, I'll be individually linking the videos, with my own comments about the trailer. At the end, I'll post a link to the individual posts, just so you can navigate much easier.

A Cold Wind Blows at Blizzard China



I'm glad Blizzard waits until after their major convention, which cost $150 per ticket to get into, to release info about their new games. Instead they spend the time joking at the expense of their fans (not very funny jokes I might add). This time though, the joke seems to be on them.

The above image surfaced around the web within the last week, and it outlines all of Blizzard's scheduled releases for the next four years. It also reveals what's likely a project name of the yet-announced game that Blizzard has been mum about (aside from making jokes that it's World of Jersey Shorecraft...ugh). Now, many people have called the legitimacy of the image into question. Most leaks usually are fake (I mean, look at the kajillion leaks that have been going around for the PSP2), but seldom do people resign over fake news.

That's right, the General Manager of Blizzard China has stepped down for reasons "yet revealed" according to a post over at bgr.com.


What are your thoughts/opinions? I just wish they had've handed these out at Blizzcon. Would have justified the $150 Tenacious D tickets we got (Though to be honest I would have paid $200 to see The D perform).

Massive Effects



Sorry that it's been a bit of time since our last update. As we've said before, we're a small group of people, and we're (at the core) gamers by nature. We get wrapped up in plenty of games, and sometimes don't have the ability to make posts.

That being said, it's been fairly hectic, between the holidays, job hunting (at least for me) and cranking out reviews. David (@thejervan on twitter) has taken back the reins of editing, and is doing a much better job (as you may have noticed with the last few reviews).

Speaking of, we've got a Donkey Kong Country Returns review up on our YouTube page (check it out!). More reviews are on the way. I just received our review copy of Nail'd from our friend Aubrey over at Southpeak games (Joe posted a preview a few weeks ago), so that's next in the review queue. I also recently picked up Epic Mickey.

Now, a lot of you probably wonder "Why are you reviewing so many Wii games?" The reason behind this is simply that there are a lot of interesting titles that have been coming out for the Wii recently. They're titles that I've been interested in since E3, and being the gamer that I am, I usually pick up games that I'm interested in. It just so happens that (thankfully for my wallet) there's not as many PS3/360 games that have been coming out that pique my interest. Nail'd is definitely one of those, and I have several more on my "To-do" list. They include Splatterhouse, Gran Turismo 5, and more Kinect time.

Speaking of Kinect, I haven't really been able to play it enough to give it a review. I only have 6 feet of space at the moment, and being 6'4" I don't really have enough space to accommodate that height. A review will come as soon as I'm actually able to get enough space, but in the meantime it's just kind of sitting there watching me as I type this.

In more recent news, I've been getting through my backlog of games at a steady pace. If you follow us on twitter (@Bossvideogaming) then you'll have seen that I was overjoyed in beating an RPG that I've had sitting in my selection for close to 10 years now. Grandia, probably my favorite RPG of all time. Once the dust settles, I'll be doing a full review of it in a new feature that we're working on, "The Test of Time" once I clear out my review pile of new games.

But more for the real reason I'm making this post. I want to do a mini-review of Mass Effect 2, a game that came out a little less than a year ago, and I find to be my personal GOTY2010 pick.

Now, I beat this game back when it first came out. I had never played a Mass Effect game before, and I went into this game expecting to be bored by it like I frequently find myself with open-world RPG's. After I finished installing the game, I instantly became hooked. The first cinematic has your ship getting blown up, and your character getting killed. I was already on the edge of my seat, as if I was watching an action movie. The graphics were at a level that I hadn't witnessed before, and I'm playing on a PC. In my opinion, they blow Crysis out of the water, and that's a game that everyone uses to benchmark their computers with. The character models are so detailed, and the textures, terrain, and even backdrops are fucking unreal.

The gameplay is pretty standard cover-based combat, but at the same time the powers and different abilities meld to make it something far more unique than any other cover-based shooter I've played before.

But it wasn't the gameplay that got me hooked. It was the interactions between the cast of characters, and the change that you felt you were unleashing upon the universe. You feel like Commander Shepherd, and although everyone knows of you, and you're the obvious hero, you're not this pre-ordained at birth hero. You're a very mortal character that can (and will die) if you fail in your mission.

Another unique aspect of this game is the ability to import your character from Mass Effect 1 into the game, further influencing your world. On my initial playthrough (as I mentioned) I hadn't played Mass Effect , so I went in cold-turkey. The game does a good job getting you up to speed, but this game is 1000x better with the contiguous save file.

The real draw though? Your interactions with the characters. There is such immersion that is present that I don't quite think I've ever felt before. Although it becomes cut and dry which choices are "good" and which are "bad", I don't think I've ever played a game where the good and the bad choices shape the outcome so much. And the game doesn't penalize you from walking off the golden-brick road either. During certain character interactions, you get a popup with either the right mouse button, or the left mouse button. Left is a "renegade" action (or a bold move, as the game tells you) and the right button is a "paragon" action, or a more noble move. The thing is, although the right mouse frequently results in someone getting killed, or fights getting started, even if you're leaning towards "paragon" you'll still have access to that action, the only thing it may change is the story.


There have since been three major DLC packs that have been released for Mass Effect 2 since I played through the initial game. Kasumi, Overlord and Lair of the Shadow Broker. This was part of my reason for coming back to this game. The other part was that I finally got through the original Mass Effect, which was a good game when it released, but is so eclipsed by the new one it just makes the game pale in comparison. The story is solid, but a lot of the gameplay mechanics are so-so.

Upon loading my game up and getting past the initial hour of the game, I already notice differences in dialog trees. I notice that there are characters that you can talk about that didn't exist in my initial playthrough, due to the game making the choices of what happened in the original game instead of me. What's more is the more that I get into the game, the more new scenes I discover, with characters that I let live in the first game appearing in places that I otherwise wouldn't have even encountered a character. I also encountered one of my old crew members in a leadership role that was filled by some other random character in my initial playthrough.

I know that Bioware has released the numbers on just how many decisions from Mass Effect 1 went into #2, but it's different when you actually experience it for yourself. I really can't wait for #3 to come out, so that I can finish this trilogy and honestly say that I had the pleasure of playing the best game trilogy of all time.

As for the DLC, it's the best DLC I've ever bought. The game clocks in around the 40-60 hour mark, so you're already getting a complete game. The two packs that were added only further enhance your gameplay.

First off, the Kasumi character pack. It adds a new squad member to your team, Kasumi Goto. She's an Infiltrator class character, which you did not have on your original crew unless you chose the class on startup. She specializes in stealth attacks. Her mission is extremely unique. It is James Bond-esque, in that you have to infiltrate the party of a wealthy crime-boss, break through his security, and find the memories of a dead partner/lover of hers. The action is amazing, and there's a set piece that had me screaming "YOU DAMN DIRTY APES!!!!" when I saw it.



It's pretty amazing, and the ending to the DLC is kind of sad.

Next up is the Overlord DLC. Basically the goal of this is to explore a Cerberus (the organization that brought you back to life) base in which an experimental Artificial Intelligence has gone haywire and killed just about everyone in the base. This is definitely a cyberpunk-inspired mission. It's about 2-4 hours long, and was extremely enjoyable. It's a little creepy, and more than once I jumped when the AI would randomly scream out gibberish in the deserted buildings. The ending is pretty cool, and made me think of Tron, as your perception of the world is coated with computer data.



The ending is pretty crazy as well.

Finally comes the cream of the crop. The Lair of the Shadow Broker DLC was probably the best DLC I have ever purchased. It centers around an old crew-member, Liara T'soni, from the first game. If you've read the comic books, you witness her rescuing the body of Commander Shepherd from the bad guys, but losing a friend in the process. You help her get revenge on the bad guys (the Shadow Broker and his long-reaching arm of corruption). Never have I played such a well-put together mission. It starts off with you telling her that you know the location of the Shadow Broker, and then it escalates from there. There's a bit of detective work, a car-chase, and a lot of fighting. When the dust settles, you get things that lend even more immersion to the game.

I may just be geeking out over this, but you get an insight into a lot of the character's personal lives, as the Shadow Broker seems to spy on everyone at all times. There's also some interesting video footage (the funniest being this) that the shadow broker was storing.


To sum it up, if you don't have this game yet, you probably don't like games very much. And you probably run around punching out old ladies. WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU. GET MASS EFFECT 2 NOW!!!

The Shattering


As everyone should now know, Blizzard's new World of Warcraft expansion "Cataclysm" will be hitting store shelves on December 7. However, Deathwing has come early to reshape the world of Azeroth in the newest content patch. Much of the Cataclysm content is in this patch, including class changes, entirely new zones, and the new race/class combos.

I could go on, but most of this information is known to you if you're a World of Warcraft player. If not, I recommend you read this post over at MMO Champion detailing the contents of the new patch. The importance of such a game changing patch should not be lost upon you, even if you've never played WoW. "Old World" Azeroth is being reshaped with new quests and updated areas for the first time since the game came out back in 2004. It'll be fun to go around seeing all of the new changes once the servers come back up in a few hours.

I realize that we never really posted anything about our trip to Blizzcon this year. Well, as expected, Cataclysm was playable and we all played it multiple times. How was it? Well, I've never been this excited for a WoW expansion. One of my least favorite things about the game (leveling) is one of the main points of this expansion, but with new quests and changes to all classes that streamline the experience, it'll actually be fun. (That's the idea, at least.) From the first second I logged into the beta server at Blizzcon, I could tell that things were different. The new Troll starting zone and developments in their lore are especially cool. I have been waiting for Trolls to get their own city since Vanilla, and while they certainly have one now, I'm a little disappointed. It looks like a larger version of Sen'jin Village. Oh well, I suppose beggars can't be choosers. Developments in lore between the new Warchief Garrosh Hellscream and the Darkspear leader Vol'jin make up for the lameness of the Troll city. Vol'jin actually has some worth now as opposed to being just the guy who taps the Brewfest keg. Other highlights include the new look for Orgrimmar and the Worgen starting zone.

I felt a twinge of jealousy when Worgen were announced for Alliance, I'll be honest. Goblins are pretty neat, I suppose, but I don't think they're as cool as werewolves. Especially now that I've played as a Worgen, I just feel like Alliance are walking away with the better deal. Their starting zone and story are super cool, and everything in Gilneas just oozes awesomeness. Gilneas draws heavily from classic werewolf movies, taking architecture, clothing, and even accents from old school Europe. Everyone who gets Cataclysm, even if they're a hardcore Horde player, needs to make a Worgen.

I didn't have much interest in the Goblins, to be honest, and that interest was further reduced by everyone else from the Boss VG crew telling me how lame their starting zone was. Everyone I talked to kept telling me that they didn't feel like there was a point to doing any of the Goblin quests. I don't know since I didn't personally do them, but that doesn't sound like good news to me. Maybe the Lost Isles and Azshara make the Goblins cooler.

If you've never tried World of Warcraft, and even if you have but disliked it, I would recommend trying Cataclysm (when a trial version is available of course). After all, the changes to Azeroth will be applied even if you only have the original WoW with no expansions. Now I get to wait a few more hours before I can see the world anew and hopefully love the changes.

APB: Reloaded



I know, there's obviously something terribly wrong with me if I have any interest in Realtime Worlds' failed "Action MMO" All Points Bulletin anymore. Especially since it has been called the "worst failure in MMO history" by the gaming journalism world. I'll agree with that. Any game that causes the bankruptcy of the developer is probably bad. However, I can't help but be a little interested when I hear the rights to APB have been purchased by GamersFirst, a creator of free to play MMOs.

The CTO of GamersFirst, Bjorn Book-Larsson said "We think of it as an opportunity. It's worth our effort to take it and combine it with all of the user data we have and let the game take its time to reach its full potential." Making the game free to play is a great idea, I think. Listening to the feedback provided by the players? That is an amazing idea.

When it was functioning correctly, I enjoyed the living hell out of APB. There were certainly great ideas involved with the game, but they were buried underneath horrible matchmaking, balance issues, bad customer service, a lack of in-game support, lag, memory issues, and a lack of anti-cheating software. There were more things wrong with the game than there were right, which is certainly why it failed, but if GamersFirst is willing to listen to feedback from beta testers, maybe the game can be saved. Like Joe once said, "I might play this game again when it's out of beta."

The new game will be called APB:Reloaded and will launch sometime during 1st Quarter 2011. It will be Free to Play, but with a cash shop. If GamersFirst can iron out some wrinkles and doesn't give too much of an advantage to people that purchase items from the cash shop, I'll be checking this game out again. I never got my hockey mask, after all. I can't be blamed for wanting it still, can I?

Kinect Day 1 (or 10 Minutes with Kinect)



Yeah, call me a sellout, call me a hypocrite, but for the sake of being (relatively) unbiased I decided to trade in a bunch of the games I've gotten through recently and finally bite the bullet by buying a Kinect.

Aaaaaanyways, that aside, I spent about 45 minutes getting ready to play the Kinect. Why? Because of the tremendous amount of space it requires to play. I can understand why it needs 8 feet of space, but it really doesn't work well even in what Kinect considers to be it's "Good Range" (about 5-6ft.). My problem is that I'm tall. Like 6'5 tall. I kind of had to jimmy-rig it with my existing systems so that it could pick up my full body within the 6 ft of space. You definitely will benefit with even one player by having a full living room to play it in.

As for the setup, other than the whole "Shifting 80% of my room around" it went fairly smoothly. It did a lot of tests, and revealed it's motor function--which sometimes is a bit creepy, because the camera will size up the room by looking down, then looking up, then finally centering itself.

But how does it work? That's the question on everyone's mind.


Having played Wii, having played Move, and having played Kinect (under the current space restriction), I still have to say that the Move works the best. The Kinect wasn't picking up a lot of my foot movements, and it overall feels a little laggy (on the gameplay side of things). Sometimes it doesn't pick up your gestures right, or you get a little bit of delay, which is odd when it's something like browsing the dashboard. Also, I don't like how I have to access a special menu to use all of the Kinect features. What happened to being able to scroll through the dashboard with your hands? As of time of writing this, I was only able to use the voice feature of the Kinect to access the Kinect menu (as the tutorial seems to prompt you as the only way to access it).

On the gameplay side? With Kinect Adventures, although I didn't play it too much, it still felt a little laggy. This is the game where I was unable to get it to pick up my leg movements while playing the game where you bounce your ball against a wall. Mainly this resulted in standing in the same place, just waving my arms to bounce the balls. I still haven't tried the other games.

On to Dance Central.

This is the game which is lauded for it's status of "Killer App" of the Kinect. I spent the majority of my time tonight (about 5 minutes to be honest) of playing it. I'll admit, I felt a little gay putting the game in and starting up with trying to dance to Lady Gaga's Poker Face (one of the easiest songs). While learning the dance moves I learned that the game actually requires the sound from you clapping as part of the dance move, and that it wouldn't accept a soft clap. The microphone actually has to pick up the clap. The fact that I was playing it in a household of sleeping people at about midnight was what finally made me quit it. More on it tomorrow, and there should be a video review sometime soon.

Nail'd Preview


Last week, George and I were on the guest list to attend the press event for a game coming out in November called Nail'd. Nail'd is an insane off-road ATV/motor cross racing game being developed by Techland and produced by Deep Silver. Going into the night I really wasn’t sure what to expect, since I hate racing games, and the last ATV game I played was a PS2 game that I didn’t even like that much. But I was excited to get drunk, enjoy, myself and hang out with George, which I haven’t done in the three something years I’ve known him.

I took a seat next to Jon Schutts, a Sr. producer over at Deep Silver. He took it upon himself to kick my ass at the game while also being extremely nice and talking to me about the game and what he does at Deep Silver.

The game prides itself in being extreme and fast, and it definitely is. The tracks are huge, not just in length but in height, and the design is insane. Imagine jumping over dams and landing on roller coasters that are going through volcanoes. The game is also very arcade-like, letting you ride along the side of dams and able to change direction while falling 100ft in the air. If you’re into those realistic simulation racers this game is not for you, but if you just want to ride on some of the most ridiculously big tracks I have ever seen and just have a good time, this game is definitely worth checking out.

It’s really too bad that this game isn’t being talked about more, because I had more fun with it than some of the shit games I have bought recently. So make sure to be on the lookout November 30th when it hits store shelves.

Super Meat Boy: Postmortem



Super Meat Boy is among my all-time favorite XBLA titles. There's something endearing about the demonic level design that makes me, as a long-time gamer, want more. In a world which is becoming increasingly more casual-catering, this game stands out like a beacon of light against the dark. I still have not got 100% on the game, which seems a near-impossible task for me. If I ever finally fight my way through my stack of backlogged titles, I will be going for the 100% achievement, but until then, this is definitely a must-have title. There's a reason why it only sold a few less copies than Kirby's Epic Yarn. That's because it's not a Nintendo title, yet it still held its ground.

I did make a bit of a slip-up in my review. What I meant to say was that it was 8-bit inspired, instead I said that the whole soundtrack was 8-bit. While there are a few levels (usually through Warp Zones) where they are straight up 8-bit, most of it is 8-bit with traditional instruments. Mad props to YouTube user DitoCoaf for pointing that out :)

Dance Central Recalled?



Not to be confused with the earlier recall that MS did because of a misprint in the game manual a few weeks ago, the "Killer App" as everyone is calling it, Harmonix's Dance Central, may be recalled from retail stores. Via twitter, @gamingangel , who was going to buy a copy of Dance Central and a Kinect, noted that Best Buy is informing people that Dance Central has been recalled, and that they are pushing Konami's Dance Masters.


Will follow up more later as the story develops.

Dead Space 2 Trailer

Anyways, this is the newest trailer for Dead Space 2. Man it's so fucking creepy. It's odd, I hate scary movies, but I like horror games. Maybe it's the medium? I don't know, but I can say that they were pretty smart with the "ring around the rosey" lyrics.

CoD: Black Ops Commercial



So while I admit the trailer is a little clever. It's got Jimmy Kimmel and Kobe Bryant, as well as a few other starts.


I'm still not excited for this game. I'm not really into super-realistic shooters where you get shot once or twice and you're dead (y'know, because I like to run around instead of camping behind corners that people walk around).

And the game will sell, probably more than MW2, despite being so similar to last year's CoD. I wonder what will happen when Treyarch doesn't get paid the royalties that Activision promises them?

LMNO

Recently there's been a lot of buzz surrounding EA's cancellation of the game LMNO. 1UP has done a very in-depth investigation into this game and they found the trailer above. It's pretty amazing, makes me a little angry the game got cancelled. The game was about a dude who for some reason is the only person drawn to Area 51 by a telepathic alien, and you bust her out, and spend the game evading the FBI. It was designed to have multiple endings and also the companion AI would learn based on the way you treated her.




Makes me very angry that it got cancelled, as I'm a sucker for multiple endings that make sense with the overarching storyline.

Shaco Ownage

If you've been following our Twitter, like you should be doing, you'd know that George has been hinting at a special League of Legends flavored video for the past week or so. I'm glad to announce that it has been edited and uploaded, after technical issue after technical issue. I'd say that it was well worth the wait and trouble. So, same as always, watch it, favorite it, like it, comment on it, and share it. We appreciate the views and support.

Also, be on the lookout for more videos soon. We've got more things planned that I'm sure you'll like. Expect more content and more regular updates from us in the near future. After a small bit of restructuring, Boss VG will be better than ever.

RIP Takeshi Shudo



Y'know, I google image searched to try to find a picture, but that was one of the first images (from a forum post not even related, oddly enough) and I found it fitting that I post that.

The creator of Pokemon died after being rushed to the hospital Thursday at 6:00 AM Japanese time. He suffered a blood hemorrhage and collapsed at a Japanese station. He was the head writer for the original Pokemon anime (back when it was any good), as well as the writing for the first three movies in the series (which still are awesome, even today).

He's also listed as having worked on some anime called "Fairy Princess Minky Momo" which (in my own limited knowledge) hasn't been brought to the states. He also wrote for the "Martian Successor Nadesico" anime (which was pretty good from what I remember).


Everyone pour out a shot of alcohol and let's have a moment of silence. The world has lost another gifted individual.

RIP Takeshi Shudo, sleep well, sweet prince.

Red Dead Zombies?

Good and bad news. The Red Dead Redemption DLC is getting a stand-alone disk for the Xbox 360. This disc also allows you to play the content without having the original version. People are saying the price range is going to be around $29.99. I'm pretty excited for it, I think Rockstar is doing an excellent job with keeping up with their community's wants and needs, almost like an MMORPG provider. Looks like it is working too, since the content is pushed out so regularly. I hope this will help with game developers putting out quality DLC instead of bullshit quick money schemes.

Keep an eye out for it.

Cataclysm!

Blizzard is knowing for their mind-blowing cinematics and the ability to pull them off so beautifully. Personally, I love game cinematics, they're reminiscent of growing up on Final Fantasy games. Nothing will ever compare to the success of Burning Crusade's cinematic, it was catchy and thrilling. Yet, with Blizzard you look at the subtle things, like how much work they put into just the plain creation of Deathwing. Nonetheless, don't let the hate it's getting keep you from enjoying the cinematic in true form.

"DOTA 2" Announced


Personally, I love arena strategy games. Some people say it's the death of the RTS, but I say it's the beginning of something fresh and new. Dota has been proclaimed in multiple sources as the most played game in the world, but that's not a huge achievement considering Dota's grandfather is Blizzard.

I'm excited to see what Valve has to offer on the genre that has made League of Legends so popular. Knowing Valve we will see quality, performance, and a late ass release date. Seeing the track pattern of Valve's releases, we won't be seeing this game out for a long while but that doesn't stomp out my excitement for the future with this game.

Tired of playing Mass Effect 2? It's time for the 'GOTY' as Joe would call it... Fable 3!!! Soon we will be graced by the only franchise that doesn't make me dry heave in disgust! This game not only has brought the flavor of good or bad choices in the gaming industry today, it has pushed the limit on immersion gaming. Last game, mini-games, real time aging, and life changing choices were some of my favorite features. In this next installment, you get to throw revolution into your arsenal bag.

As you can tell I'm really excited for the game that releases on October 26th. Let's just hope it doesn't get Project Milo'd. Oh, and if you're really horny for some Fable 3, a cinematic trailer was released featuring the song "Young Dead Men" by the Black Angels.

Updates


Hey, it's been a while.

One would think that now we're getting recognizance as a video game news blog, that we would be updating more. This has not been the case due to a variety of factors. I'm not going to point fingers or put out a list of excuses. We've been busy actually playing games, for one. That's something you forget about people who blog about video games, they seem to spend so much time blogging that it doesn't seem like they play anything. Maybe I'm alone in that impression. However, the most operative reason lies within a restructuring of Boss VG itself.

We started this website back in February. The Boss Talk show started in March. We've come a long way since then and we're learning more every day. George and Joe have improved on their speaking skills and (I think) have become more entertaining. George has also learned how to edit and become very good at Twitter. I've improved my editing skills tenfold, and learned about podcasting. Armand has been doing a great job helping us set goals and push out content, not to mention guiding our creative processes and providing some next level beats.

At the time of me typing this, we have 113 YouTube subscribers, 23,957 total upload views, 83 Twitter followers, and 40 total podcast hits. I'd say that's not bad at all for a group breaking into a field that none of us had any extensive schooling/experience within, but we can do much better.

Being invited to the Tron event, despite not being with Kotaku, IGN, or any of the mainstream gaming news sites, proves to me that we're doing something right.

That being said, the main reason we haven't been updating is because we're experiencing a shift in our dynamic. Switching the show to a weekly podcast allows us to talk about everything that happened that week, without endlessly regurgitating the same information you'll find on the other gaming sites. However, this also leaves us at a loss for content to post. After all, why mention it in depth if we're going to talk about it on the podcast in a couple of days anyway?

We're figuring out exactly what to do with the blog, and we have ideas. Sometime soon, we plan a redesign of the site, but to what extent I can't say. Our YouTube channel will be getting some love soon too. We've fallen behind on reviews, but we'll rectify that in coming weeks. On top of that, we have some different content planned for the YouTube channel at some point. I can't say much more than that.

The point of this post? We're still alive. Cool things will be happening soon. Oh, and thanks to all of the people that have helped us along.

Also, I personally plan on posting on the blog more. No reason not to, after all.

EDIT: I realize now that using a picture of George when I'm the one posting is a little weird. But hey, Tron event is related, and if you're not attracted to George at least a little bit, you probably don't have taste.
